To me, this photo is appalling; gallons of motor oil dumped straight into the soil. Dumping oil like this anywhere in the US would likely result in a massive fine — and possibly jail time — if caught. In Ghana, and much of the non-Westernized world, no one bats and eye when they see environmental damage like this. In fact, I don’t think the word “environmental damage” means anything to the majority of the world. After all, for those that are among the 2 billion people living on less than $2 a day, I can (unfortunately) understand how feeding your family on a daily basis takes precedence over environmental concerns.
