Are You Living Your Life to the Fullest?
I was a big fan of the Curious Case of Benjamin Button film, and so is Caz apparently — she just penned a fantastic post titled The Curious Case of Living that’ll make you think. Here is a quote I love from her post (in the movie it’s a postcard Brad Bitt writes to his daughter): For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best … Continue reading
Why Is Seeing A Photo of Yourself Such a Novelty (Especially for Kids in Ghana)?
As to an answer to the question posed in the title of this post — I’m not sure, but especially in the Anloga region of Ghana, it is. This morning while exploring a lagoon, this child’s family asked me to take a photo of this child and show him the photo.
A Story of What Life Could Be Like
I just read (well, skimmed though some parts) two books – Out of Poverty and Made to Stick. I thought I’d combine some of the concepts of the two books and repeat a story from Out of Poverty. Here is the story of a pavement-dwelling family that lives underneath the balcony of Paul Polak’s colleague Zenia Tata at the IDE. Her family has known them 25 years (the book was published in 2008): The mother and father in this sidewalk family are both lame, crippled by polio, and they live with their healthy five-year-old son on a spot originally settled by the husband’s parents. The husband makes a living darting in and out of the … Continue reading
Congrats to SkillSlate for Raising $1.1 Million
Congrats to my buddy Brian and the entire Skillslate team for securing their first round of funding of $1.1 million. The site helps people find local services such as NYC movers & dog walkers. I first met Brian during my early Zillow days while he worked at Yahoo! Real Estate; he was my day to day contact for the Zillow-YRE! partnership formed in 2006 and we’ve remained in touch ever since. The local services area that Skillslate is targeting is a niche with tremendous upside, and it’s extremely smart to tackle one city (in this case, NYC) to really figure out the product & business model before expanding into other geographic areas. Looking forward to seeing … Continue reading
Headed Back to the US for a Stint
It’s now official — after essentially traveling nonstop since March, I’m headed back in the United States for a stint at the end of November after my trip to Ghana. I just purchased a ticket from Accra to Washington DC (I’m actually on the same flight back to the US as Sloane and Taylor are) on November 21st. My buddy Dan and I were planning to visit South Africa for a month & make pay David Gibbons a visit, but tickets from Accra to SA are more than $1,300 and we’re both running a little lower on funds than we’d like — so we both want to hunker down and sort out our finances prior to the … Continue reading

Your Chance to Help an Aspiring Computer Programmer Achieve his Dream
I met an ambitious youth named Michael Richard while in Tanzania a couple weeks ago who aspires to study computing programming in the United States. He has a friend in San Diego who has said he’ll help him with tuition and room & board, but Michael looking to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test to improve his chances of getting a visa to study in the United States. The cost of the test is $180. If you’d like to help fund the $180, please reach out to me and I’ll put you in touch with Michael.
