If Elected, How is Dino Rossi Going to Fix Our Traffic Problem?

My answer is he won’t. I took at look at his transportation plan and am not impressed. His congestion relief projects all involve improving and expanding current roads. Additionally, Rossi says in this video – “that gas tax? that’s a thing of the past.”

Here’s the way I see it. He says we have some of the highest gas prices in the nation, but part of his plan is to lower those taxes. I really don’t understand how cutting gas prices is going to somehow magically improve our horrid congestion. If anything, lowering gas prices will only increase our traffic woes. What Seattle really needs is more mass transit — such as the light rail project voters rejected about a year ago.

But what do I know…

You apparently didn’t read the whole transprtation plan. Might wanna go back and read up a litte before throwing out bold assertions.

Dino’s plan also includes widening the 520 Bridge and Highway 2 (the deadliest highway in the Northwest), opening HOV lanes during non-peak hours, offering huge tax incentives for buying hybrid and electric vehicles to reduce fuel consumption, etc.

Also, what are you going to do in non-Puget Sound Washington? Some people have to drive to work, and mass transit isn’t an option, like in Wenatchee, Yakima, Walla Walla, the Tri-Cities, Chehalis, etc. The world doesn’t revolve around Seattle you know? Other people do live in the state of Washington.

Yes, I saw the widening projects. However, I don’t believe that widening roads is a solution to traffic problems. The freeways in Los Angeles have like 8 lanes and they still have horrible congestion. The fact of the matter is that widening roads will help (slightly) in the short term, but long term drivers will fill up the roads regardless of how many lanes we add. I’m not in favor of short term solutions.
