I really think there ought to be better solutions than Microfinance. While Microfinance is doing its bit, I do think the rate at which we are helping by whatever means is far slower than the rate at which living conditions are deteriorating. I think we must really think hard about a more holistic approach. While I will do my bit to contribute to poverty alleviation, I am sure there will be other undiscovered opportunities that should really accelerate this process. I would also like mention a point about population growth, especially in India. Unless the population growth rate is slowed down, problems are just going to get exponentially worse. I am passionate about "generating employment in rural areas". This will hopefully get people access to better health care, education. The automatic by-product of this is lower population growth. I think, by enhancing money making capabilities of the rural poor, we will be able to solve this problem holistically. We must not target helping individuals, but help a "community" come out of poverty.
I am an entrepreneur who has worked in the Software Industry and in now very interested in joining the social entrepreneurship bandwagon. I initially thought of setting up a Kiva.org model for India, but have second thoughts now. I want to really think through what I must start. I have a lot of experience with Search Engine Marketing and have the knowledge to drive traffic to websites. I just want to use my tech and SEO skills to see how I can make a difference. I have just started blogging about Povery Reduction to start with. I would love to know your thoughts, suggestions ideas on how and what I can contribute towards that coule make a significant difference to peoples lives.

Thank you Drew. Thank for reminding all of us of what we know in our hearts but fail to remember in our minds and our actions. Makes the whining about our business and our lives seem pretty pathetically trivial and meaningless, doesn't it? This post is going to be required reading for my daughters, my daughters who are, on the whole, good, compassionate people but who, having been born into privilege by most of the world's standards, don't truly have a grasp of what they possess or the change they are capable of effecting in the lives of the less fortunate.

Your stock with me just went through the roof.

i can read from your posts that you have the passion of following and doing what you believe in. and that's great!

i wish you luck for your upcoming trip to the Dominican Republic.

It is always a different view if you are in the centre of the action. watch, observe and act out your beliefs. it is a great and rewarding feeling indeed. helping those in need is priceless. and at your age, you'll go a long way!
